Here’s what’s buzzing among our guests about the Kilauea Restaurant... excellent food, great presentation, friendly staff, and the atmosphere is superb. Guests voted it their favorite on our tours in 2006.
The Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant was built in 1938 for the YMCA as a 10-acre campground retreat. The current owners, Albert and Lorna Jeyte, purchased the campground in 1986, transforming it into an elegant affair with mouth-watering cuisine.
Chef Albert combines contemporary trends with traditional cooking styles from the mainland, France, and his native Hamburg, Germany.
Albert, an Emmy-winning makeup artist, came to Hawaii to work in the movie industry. His work includes more than 10 movies and TV programs, including the movie Peter and Paul and the TV series “Magnum, PI.” It was at this time that he met his wife, Lorna, and together they fell in love with the old YMCA campground.
After buying the campground and transforming it into a hotel and restaurant, Albert decided to become a world-class chef and spent time abroad learning to create his own unique cuisine.
Chef Albert combines contemporary trends with traditional cooking styles from the mainland, France, and his native Hamburg, Germany. His specialties include European favorites: Hasenpfeffer (braised rabbit in a hearty hunter’s wine sauce), medallions of venison (free-range venison flamed with brandy and mushrooms, served with Nicole sauce), duck á l’orange (roasted with oranges, pepper and garlic and served with apricot mustard glaze), and — without fail — “the fresh catch of the day” from island waters.
The restaurant has a rustic elegance. It is set in the cool country air of the Volcano Village near the Volcanoes National Park. It still has the original “Friendship Fireplace,” which is studded with engraved stones submitted by people and organizations from around the world.
The Kilauea Lodge is just one more escapade to look forward to on your fun-filled vacation with Bicycle Adventures.
