Orcas – also known as killer whales – are regularly sighted here in the Pacific Northwest. In their flashy black-and-white tuxedos, they’re a breathtaking sight: wild and joyous, unlike any other creature on the planet. Living near Puget Sound, we have multiple opportunities for sighting the mysterious, majestic beasts who migrate through our waters. They’ll often spend a week or a month to nibble on salmon or seal as they travel south or north. And like the true worshipers we are, we show up with cameras and kayaks, hoping for a closer (but not too close) glimpse, and perhaps a prize photo to flaunt.
